Protoplanetary discs have a lifetime much longer than a human lifetime. To understand they evolve over millions of years, one of the most direct approaches is to study discs at different evolutionary stages across nearby star-forming regions. These population-level studies help us understand how stellar mass, ages, multiplicity and the external environment affect disc evolution.
